The Different Types of Music Videos

Performance based music videos:

A performance based music video is a music video that features the artist or artists throughout the music video and they usually include close up shots of said artist(s). Many common performance based music videos include the artist(s) on a stage or singing to the song and do not include a storyline. Additionally, the artist(s) in the video will have very few or no props throughout the music video other than the instruments they are playing on and microphones as this keeps the music video as simplistic as possible. It is very rare to see artists wear excessive amounts of makeup in performance based music videos, but they will usually wear plain and casual clothes - this does depend on the genre, however.

Some examples of a performance based music video are:

The Foo Fighters use an abandoned hall with a glossy red wall in the background, this is a classic example of a performance based music video as the artists are playing instruments throughout the whole music video. The only props within the music video are the instruments and the microphones. The majority of shots are close up camera shots but some are also medium shots and some are extreme close ups. The artists are wearing casual clothes and they have no visible makeup on. This is a perfect example of a performance music video:

P!nk's 'Just Give Me A Reason' featuring Nate Ruess is a hybrid of two types of music video - Concept based music videos and performance based music video. This is because it features scenes where the artist -P!nk - is singing into a microphone (this makes it a performance based music video) and is also lying on a bed which adds no development to the performance (this makes it a concept based music video).

Narrative based music videos:
A narrative based music video is a music video that contains footage that tries to tell a story throughout the video and they usually have a story that is linked to the song lyrics. The story usually links to the song in order to support the theme or genre of the song, but sometimes this is not the case. Sometimes narrative based music videos can be music videos that have come as a result of a film or television show and this increases popularity due to the viewership of said film or television show - this is known as intertextuality. Due to the fact that music videos are very short, narrative music videos are often very fast paced so that enough can be fitted into the small time slot. The artist(s) of the song can sometimes be seen as part of the story, as an observer or can be completely separate to the music video.

'Dance, Dance' by Fall out Boy is both a narrative and performance based music video. This is because it matches the lyrics in the song - the video is set at a dance and also features lyrics like 'dance, dance!'. It also has elements of a performance based music video as it features the artists playing their song on a stage in front of people.

Concept based music videos:

Concept based music videos are a type of music video that is based around a single concept or idea and they usually are not relevant to the song lyrics. They are usually unique because of their extensive editing and wide use of camera shots and angles. Concept based music videos usually come as a result of a low budget, this results in minimal use of props, makeup and clothing but this is not always the case as we can see with Major Lazer. Major Lazer is well known for his weird and unusual concept based music videos

Lean On is both a performance based music video and a concept based music video. This is because it features the main singer 'MØ' singing throughout the music video, but it also does not have any real relevance to the song itself as it does not link to the lyrics of the song.
